Bridgend College receives quality mark for top careers advice and work-related education
We are delighted to have recently been awarded the Careers Wales Mark for our careers service here at the College.
The ‘Mark’ is an award designed by Careers Wales to recognise a commitment to continuous quality improvement within an educational institution to meet with the Welsh Government’s requirements that are set out in the ‘Careers and the World of Work: a framework for 11-19 year-olds in Wales’.
This is fantastic recognition of the hard work that has gone into building a new and innovative careers provision for our students, and is a testament to the vision that the College has in investing to ensure that students have access to an excellent range of opportunities and support to enhance their career prospects.
It began just over two years ago with the formation of our new careers hub, ‘Cyfleoedd’. This became an exciting and innovative space, providing students with career advice and guidance, work placements, live business projects, and the best local recruitment opportunities.
The team developed the provision rapidly and through student engagement, career activities and events, partnership work with employers, and positive backing from the College’s Senior Leadership Team, the Careers team grew with the addition of two more Career Coaches.
From the initial vision to this point in time, one thing has not changed and that is our commitment to ensuring we have a robust service for careers education, and advice and guidance. In undertaking and achieving the Careers Wales Mark, we have had the opportunity to evidence the good work that has been established, and it will help us to continue in our development.
Careers Leader, Steve Jones, commenting on the recent achievement:
“We are delighted to have achieved the Careers Wales Mark as a Quality Award for our careers service at Bridgend College. Over the last two years we have built up a strong careers team and have continually developed, and looked to embed, an excellent careers programme for our students. We are eager to consistently grow our offer and be a leader in delivering excellent careers and employability support in education.”
From the beginning, the clear aim has been to follow the well-established model used in England, of aligning the College’s career provision with the Gatsby Benchmarks. As part of this, we are now preparing to undertake the rigorous ‘Quality in Careers Standard’ which will measure our careers service against the Gatsby Benchmarks.
We are proud to be the first FE college in Wales to be undertaking this and feel that it underlines our intent to be at the forefront of excellent careers advice and guidance in Welsh education.
