Further Education (FE) colleges campaign for increase of funding

This week, Bridgend College is taking part in Caru Ein Colegau (Love Our Colleges) week. This is an opportunity to highlight the range of exceptional work which goes on within colleges and the inspirational staff who make it all possible. Colleges Week is our opportunity to call on Welsh Government to urgently increase college funding to sustainable levels, including immediate parity with recently announced increases to schools funding. This will give all students a fair chance, give college staff fair pay and provide the high-quality skills the country needs.

Further education colleges are an essential part of Wales’s education system. Providing a range of lifelong learning opportunities, from first-class vocational and technical education, basic skills to academic and higher-level qualifications, colleges are there to help people achieve their ambitions. Located centrally in communities around Wales, they are crucial hubs of opportunities driving social mobility and as skills providers boosting local and regional economies. Altogether, the economic impact of the FE colleges in Wales to the local business community in Wales is £4 billion each year.

Colleges create significant positive benefits for their main stakeholder groups: learners, society, taxpayers, and the local business community, but for too long the vital work they do has been overlooked and underfunded. That is why colleges and NUS Cymru are coming together to call for better funding and fair pay for further education colleges.

Since 2008, college funding has been cut. Securing a fair funding settlement for colleges will ensure they can continue to play their crucial role in our education system and provide the high-quality skills provision that Wales needs.

Iestyn Davies, Chief Executive ColegauCymru / CollegesWales said, “Colleges play a crucial role in ensuring people have the right skills and knowledge to enter the workplace with confidence and help contribute to the Welsh economy. ColegauCymru / CollegesWales hope Welsh Government sees value in the college offer and ask that it continues it support through sufficient funding.”
