Working in the performing arts sector is not always about performing in front of an audience. There are great career opportunities for those who have creative practical skills who are key to staging entertainment events.

This UAL Level 4 Professional Diploma in Technical and Production Practice for the Creative Industries qualification is suitable for those with an interest in production Arts, or related subjects such as Design and Technology, Art, Fashion and Textiles or Drama, who wish to explore and extend this interest via a full-time immersive learning experience.

This course will allow you to develop creative and practical techniques using studios, specialist workshops and purpose-built facilities. You will reflect the day-to-day reality of the industry through project-based briefs and public performances alongside extending your academic knowledge and skills.

The course is flexible enough to assess you through your chosen specialism, while remaining a broad foundation of skills and processes. This includes:

  • Design for Performance eg set, costume, lighting, sound
  • Stage Management eg deputy stage management, assistant stage management, prop making
  • Technical Theatre eg sound and light operation and programming, rigging, video
  • Other supporting skills include: set construction, scenic art, prop making, puppetry, wardrobe management and computer-assisted design using industry-standard software

The awarding body for this qualification is UAL.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways, which could include assignments, external examinations, case studies and continual class assessment.

  • 2 A Levels or equivalent Level 3 qualification, preferably including English and Maths GCSE. Equivalent qualifications are accepted
  • Mature students without formal qualifications will need to demonstrate a desire to study creative arts and moving on to higher education
  • Acceptance onto the course is at the discretion of the course tutor

This one year intensive course supports you through your drama college application journey into Higher Education or is a one-year fast track into employment.

The course is suitable for those interested in developing a career within the vast performing arts industry as a; technician, stage manager, production manager, set designer, costume designer, prop maker, scenic artist, lighting designer/operator, sound designer/operator.
