You don’t have to be a top athlete or a one in a million who makes a professional team to get a job in sports. You can qualify as a sports coach, physiotherapist, personal trainer, nutritionist, a sports teacher and much more within this huge industry. We have industry experienced tutors in the sports department at Bridgend College along with state of the art facilities that create an innovative and vibrant learning environment.

Our Pencoed Campus facilities include a sports hall with a climbing wall, rugby and football pitches, a 3G pitch, strength and conditioning gym and fitness suite. You will be supported by a team of highly qualified staff who many have played to a professional level at their chosen sport.

You will develop a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for career development in sport specific employment. You will also get the opportunity to study towards nationally recognised coaching qualifications.

Modules may include:

  • Sports massage
  • Sports injuries
  • Principles of anatomy and physiology
  • Fitness training
  • Sports nutrition
  • Sports coaching
  • Sports psychology
  • Exercise, health and lifestyle
  • Practical sports
  • Current issues in sport

You will also develop a number of skills including numeracy, literacy and digital skills throughout the course.

The awarding body for this qualification is Pearson BTEC.

You will be assessed in a variety of different ways including:

  • Practical observations
  • Group tasks
  • Video evidence
  • Written assessments
  • Presentations
  • Case studies
  • Work experience
  • External assessments
  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including English and Maths. Equivalent qualifications are accepted, including a Merit at Level 2

Note, for entry to play in the Rugby Academy or Football Academy, you will be required to attend a trial and pre-season training.

Successful completion of the first year will enable you to achieve the Level 3 90 Credit Diploma.

Progress to Year 2 to achieve the full Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport (Development and Coaching).

Upon successful completion of the Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport, progress to the HND Sport Performance and Coaching.
