Would you like to have a challenging and rewarding career where no two days are the same? We rely on public and emergency services, not only for major disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes, but also more local concerns, such as anti-social behaviour in our community.

This course will give you a strong, practical and academic grounding in the organisation, management and operation of these services.

Year 1 modules may include:

  • Understanding crime, victims and society
  • Planning operations
  • Organisation and behaviour in the public sector
  • Public affairs
  • Exploring public services

Year 2 modules may include:

  • Emergencies, disasters and transport
  • Work experience social policy
  • Equality and diversity
  • Public services project
  • Public service law

Work and study placements will further develop your skills and allow you to put theory to practice. They are also a good way of experiencing work in your chosen area before you graduate, helping you to make the right decisions when applying for jobs after completing your course.

You will learn through a range of methods, usually a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops.

At later stages of the course, you will have the chance to work on projects, either individually or in groups. Outside activities are also built into the programme, as are guest speakers and project work.

You will need:

  • 2 A levels at grade D OR
  • BTEC Extended Diploma at PPP OR
  • A pass in an Access to HE Diploma to include passes in 45 Level 3 credits, in relevant subjects (or other equivalent qualifications)
  • Plus 3 GCSEs at grade C or above, to include Maths and English (or other equivalent qualifications)

Mature applicants lacking formal entry requirements but with relevant and/or industrial experience will also be considered. You may be invited to attend an interview.

Many of our graduates have used this course as a route into the police and fire services. It is also a valuable qualification if you want a career in the ambulance service, the armed forces, prison and security services, HM Customs and Excise or community service organisations.

By successfully completing this course, you will have the option to progress to the final year of the BA (Hons) Public Services course at the University of South Wales, where your studies will focus on developing your employability skills, giving you an advantage in today’s competitive employment market.
