Land-based Studies

Do you want a qualification that can lead you towards your first steps within a land-based career?

This course offers the opportunity to gain the practical skills required by the industry, and move towards employment or further study in courses such as agriculture or animal care.

Sessions are delivered on working farms in the area and you get to experience handling animals such as cattle, sheep and poultry.

Areas of learning include:

  • Looking after livestock
  • Fencing
  • Footpath maintenance
  • Keeping healthy animals
  • Repairing and maintaining boundaries

You will also develop a number of skills including numeracy, literacy and digital skills throughout the course.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways, which could include written work, practical assessments, and multiple choice tests.

You will also be advised of opportunities to gain practical proficiency certificates (NPTC, LANTRA) in areas such as chainsaw use, brush cutter strimmer, and tractor driving.

  • There are no formal entry requirements for this programme, but you are expected to have basic literacy and numeracy skills

If you successfully complete this course, you will be eligible to apply for progression to the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care, Horticulture, Agriculture or Horse Care.
