This course will raise your skill level and enhance your knowledge to promote progression from basic welding skills to a more highly developed understanding of equipment functions and how materials behave. You will be taught the correct and safe procedures that are paramount in the fabrication and welding industry.

  • Identify and select protective clothing for safe working practice
  • Identify associated risks when welding to include:

– Arc radiation burns
– Arc eye
– Burns from handling hot materials
– Welding fumes
– Electric shocks
– Fire
– Sparks

  • Identify the need for maintaining a clean and tidy working environment with adequate fume ventilation, to minimise hazards and fire risks
  • Identify fire prevention and emergency / evacuation procedures required in the workplace
  • Follow the correct procedures for assembling / dismantling welding equipment and have an awareness of startup and shut down procedures
  • Observe safe operating procedures in the use of MMA, MIG/MAG & TIG welding equipment
  • Demonstrate competence for a range of welding applications and welded joint types
  • Complete welds on low carbon steel up to 10 mm in thickness, tasks to include:

– Striking & maintaining and arc

– Depositing a weld bead with and without weaving
– Depositing an outside corner weld
– Depositing a lap weld
– Depositing a tee-fillet weld
– Depositing a butt weld

  • Welds to be completed in the PA (Flat) or PB (Horizontal /Vertical )positions
  • Check weld quality using visual examination and destructive testing techniques
  • Be able to identify typical weld defects, and state their typical causes

A portfolio of evidence built throughout the course.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

On successfully achieving this qualification, you could progress into employment within a fabrication and welding environment or a manufacturing environment.
