Horse Care (Work-based)

  • Level 1 Diploma

  • 1 year full-time

Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t always take a skilled rider to be successful in the equine industry. In fact, there are many opportunities for those who have never ridden a day in their lives.

We have excellent facilities to help you further your studies in the area of horse care, with an emphasis on hands on training to help you really get the full experience. Our facilities include stabling for 30 horses, indoor and outdoor arenas and a cross-country course.

Do you want a qualification that can set you towards your first steps in an equine career? This course offers the opportunity to improve the necessary practical skills to move towards employment (eg Yard Groom).

You will gain practical hands-on experience working and learning about a variety of stable management topics, and how to work with horses in a safe and efficient way. There will be dedicated practical stable duties on the college equine yards.

Subjects will include:

  • Feeding and watering horses
  • Grooming and washing
  • Rugs and tack
  • Stable duties

You will also develop a number of skills including numeracy, literacy and digital skills throughout the course.

There is also an option to improve your ride skills on this course and you will have the opportunity to train towards BHS qualifications.

Practical and written assessments throughout the year.

  • You should have basic literacy and numeracy skills in order to complete this qualification

Following successful completion, progress to Level 2 Extended Certificate / Diploma in Horse Care.

Enrolment fee: £40
