Foundation Studies Construction and Building Services Engineering

  • Level 1 / Foundation Diploma

  • 1 year full-time

Do you want to work in the construction and building services sector?

Our courses provide a broad introduction to construction and the building services. You will develop an appreciation of how all areas of construction work together to build efficient and safe buildings. You will begin to develop skills across 2 trades, preparing you to identify your chosen trade and progress to further study or an apprenticeship.

This qualification supports you to develop an introductory knowledge and understanding of:

  • The built environment life cycle, the job roles within it, and the dependencies between people performing those roles
  • How to promote and sustain health and safety for oneself and others
  • Employability skills relevant to future work

You will complete 6 ‘core’ units which holistically cover:

  • An introduction to the construction and built environment sectors
  • Employment and employability skills
  • Health and safety

In addition to these ‘core’ units, you will spend additional time planning, performing and evaluating common tasks across 2 trades from the following list:

  • Construction operations and civil engineering operations along with working with brick, block and stone
  • Wood occupations along with painting and decorating (decorative finishing and industrial painting occupations)
  • Plumbing and domestic heating along with electrotechnical systems and equipment

Assessments will include project work, discussion and online tests.

You will need to have achieved, or be working towards, your Level 2 Essential Skills or GCSE English/Welsh first language and Maths (or equivalent).

There are no other additional entry requirements for this qualification.

This qualification will prepare you to progress in your chosen trade as an apprentice or onto further study via the Progression in Construction or Progression in Building Services Engineering qualifications (available September 2022).
