Aims of the course
Follow correct health and safety procedures
- Use tools and equipment safely
- Work in a neat and orderly manner
Know dangerous plants
- Recognise 3 common poisonous garden plants, name the poisonous parts of those plants and identify the effects
Know and use basic floral design tools and equipment
- Use basic design tools including scissors, knife and water sprayer
- Use basic floral design equipment including containers/bases, wet and dry foam and pot tape
Use the basic method of conditioning plant materials
- Condition various types of flowers and foliages for use in floral designs
Know the colour terms used in floral design
- Complete the colour wheel
- Define tints, tones and shades
Know a range of suitable foliage
Select and use a range of suitable foliage for various designs
Know and use fruit and vegetables in floral design
Select and incorporate fruit and vegetables in a floral design
Use preserved plant materials in a floral design
Make a simple arrangement using a limited amount of preserved materials
Construct basic floral designs
Complete a range of basic floral designs including:
- Posy
- Line
- Symmetrical
- Topiary tree
- Table decoration
Assessment
Ongoing assessment with evidence of achieving the aims of the course.
