Horse Management

  • Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma

  • 2 years full-time

We have excellent facilities to help you further your studies in the area of horse care, with an emphasis on hands on training to help you really get the full experience. Our facilities include stabling for 30 horses, indoor and outdoor arenas and a cross-country course.

Studying at Level 3, you will benefit from work placement which is a great opportunity to experience working within an existing organisation and see what happens in an actual workplace.

This is an ideal course if you are looking for an A level equivalent qualification which will help launch your dream career in the equine industry.

You will attend dynamic sessions which will cover a large variety of equestrian topics. You will develop the specific technical, professional skills and knowledge which will lead to meaningful employment in the equine industry. You will explore a wide range of subjects including stable yard operations, horse health, exercising horses (there are also non ride options), fitting and evaluating horse tack / equipment, stud and business.

You will also be prepared for the world of work through the completion of a 2 week placement off campus plus weekly work experience on the college yard. As part of the course, you will also assist staff with the running of events, shows and BHS exams held at the college.

Our Equestrian Centre is BHS approved and a well established Welsh competition venue for dressage and show jumping.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways which will include assignments, controlled assessments and exams.

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (must include English language and Science) OR
  • Level 2 Technical Certificate Equine at Merit

If applying for the ‘ride option’, you must have the ability to ride a horse at walk, trot, canter and be able to jump over a small fence.

On successful completion of the first year, you will have achieved the Level 3 Advanced Technical Certificate in Equine Management. Successful completion of the second year will enable you to achieve the full Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Equine Management and eligibility to progress to HND Equine Studies or other higher education study.

Alternatively, progress to employment such as a riding instructor (with BHS qualifications), yard manager, competition work or as a business owner.
