The purpose of BTEC Higher Nationals in Construction and the Built Environment is to develop you as a professional, self-reflecting individual able to meet the demands of employers in the construction and the built environment sector and adapt to a constantly changing world.

The qualifications aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.

Modules may include:

  • Individual project (set by Pearson)
  • Construction technology
  • Science and materials
  • Construction practice and management
  • Mathematics for construction
  • Principles of heating services design and installation
  • Principles of ventilation, air-conditioning design and installation

Assessment is carried out for each unit through a series of assignments. For heating, air conditioning and public health units, they are all related to a particular building. This ensures that you have a complete design for the building at the end of the year.

The Project unit is an assessment set by Pearson.

There are a variety of acceptable entry situations. These are:

  • A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction and the Built Environment
  • A GCE A Level profile which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than 1 GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent)
  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  • An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution
  • Related work experience
  • An international equivalent of the above

On completion of the HNC (Level 4), you may be able to progress to the HND (Level 5).

After completion of the HND, you can progress to the full degree at an external university. Degrees are available at a number of universities which are accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) as part of the pathway to full membership status.
