The department has unique and exciting facilities such as our ‘Forest School’ teaching area and the College’s own Day Nursery, where you will experience cutting edge industry practice and be involved in a range of practical hands-on activities.

Studying at Level 3, you will benefit from work placement which is a great opportunity to experience working within an existing organisation and see what happens in an actual workplace.

This course is studied alongside the Skills Challenge Certificate of the Welsh Baccalaureate to give you a 3 A Level equivalent programme of study.

This qualification will enable you to develop the knowledge and skills required for employment and/or career progression in childcare or health settings. It combines both practice units which are assessed within the workplace with additional theoretical knowledge. You are required to complete a minimum of 700 hours of work placement to achieve this qualification.

Modules may include:

  • Promoting core practice in children’s care, play, learning and development
  • Principles and theories that influence children’s care, play, learning and development in the 21st century in Wales
  • Promoting nutrition and hydration in early years

You will also develop a number of skills including numeracy, literacy and digital skills throughout the course.

The awarding body for this qualification is Health & Care Learning Wales.

You will be assessed continually throughout the course. Assessments will include a portfolio of evidence, a discussion with your assessor, an external examination and an externally set and marked extended investigation.

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English and Maths
  • Equivalent qualifications are accepted including WJEC and City & Guilds CCPLD at Level 2 plus GCSE English at grade C

Successful completion of Year 2 will enable you to progress to a variety of higher education courses, some of which are available with Bridgend College.

Possible careers include working as a fully qualified early years worker in a nursery, day nursery, hospital or workplace creche.
