If you would like to work in childcare or if you are employed and keen to further your career, this course teaches the full range of skills for working with children and young people from birth to 18 years.

This is the ideal route into professional childcare, teaching or other work with young people, and provides both classroom-based study and practical experience.

Having strong links with local employers, the course will enable you to develop knowledge and understanding of the issues faced by people working in the childcare sector and provides excellent opportunities for employment or further study.

You will study the professional aspects of working in childcare, from communication with colleagues to legislation and children’s rights. You will also study all aspects of childhood, from children’s health and development to education and play.

Modules may include:

  • Leading work in Children’s and Young People’s Services
  • Communication and partnership
  • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Research
  • Theories of development

Assessments will include written assignments, reports, seminars, debates and presentations, portfolios, and projects within the workplace.

  • 2 A levels at grade D OR
  • BTEC Extended Diploma at PPP OR
  • A pass in an Access to HE Diploma to include passes in 45 Level 3 credits, in relevant subjects (or other equivalent qualifications)
  • Plus 3 GCSEs at grade C or above, to include Maths and English (or other equivalent qualifications)

Mature applicants lacking formal entry requirements but with relevant and/or industrial experience will also be considered.

You may be invited to attend an interview.

On successful completion, you can use this qualification to progress a career working with children, eg nursery nurse or teaching assistant. With further study, you may become a children’s nurse, health visitor, early years teacher, child psychotherapist or social worker.

There are also opportunities for progression to the BSc in Childhood Studies (Top-up) at the University of South Wales.
