Canine First Aid

By the end of the course, you will be able to explain what you can and can’t do in an emergency situation in accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and recognise conditions requiring emergency first aid to include unconsciousness, seizures and shock.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain what you can and can’t do in an emergency situation in accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966
  • Recognise conditions requiring emergency first aid to include unconsciousness, seizures and shock
  • Recognise types of haemorrhage and state methods of control
  • Describe resuscitation procedures to include Heimlich manoeuvre, artificial respiration and cardiac massage
  • Demonstrate how to perform first aid around the home and garden: burns, scalds, electrocution, poisoning, bites and stings
  • Describe safe transport of a critically ill or injured dog to the veterinary practice

Practical assessment and portfolio work.
