This course will provide you with the basic skills to use Microsoft Excel. You will understand how to create Excel workbooks and worksheets and navigate around them. You will learn how to use some of Excel’s basic features and learn time-saving exercises such as Autosum and Autofill, how to create simple formulae and format worksheets.

  • The Excel environment
  • Copying, moving and deleting information
  • Copying, moving, resizing and deleting rows and columns
  • Using the Format Painter
  • Formatting in Excel (border and shading, cell formatting)
  • Wrap text feature
  • Merge and centre feature
  • Text alignment and text formatting
  • Creating basic formulas using mathematical operators (+,-,/ and *)
  • Using BODMAS rules to create formulas
  • Creating percentage formulas
  • Absolute cell referencing (using dollar ($ signs) in formulas)
  • Managing worksheets (insert, delete, rename, move, copy worksheets and colouring worksheet tabs)
  • Using and managing the Autosum feature (sum and average feature)
  • Using Excel functions such as: sum and Average Function, max and min function and count function

Assessment is by portfolio of work.

You will need:

  • Basic IT Skills including saving, opening and closing documents and computer applications, ie Excel
  • Good keyboard and mouse skills
  • Proficient data entry skills
  • Ability to copy, move and delete information to a basic standard
  • Basic Excel formatting skills, ie changing font colour and font sizes
  • Aligning information in Excel including left, centre and right alignment
  • Basic knowledge of Excel calculations, ie adding and subtracting

Progress to the Excel Intermediate and Advanced sessions.
