It’s good to remember that the performing arts sector is not always about performing in front of an audience. There are some great opportunities for those who have creative practical skills who are key to staging entertainment events such as stagehands and lighting technicians.
The course is suitable for those interested in developing a career within the vast performing arts industry as a; technician, stage manager, production manager, set designer, costume designer, prop maker, scenic artist, lighting designer/operator, sound designer/operator.
Overview and modules
The course aims to give you a comprehensive introduction to the skills required to embark on a career or progression to higher education / specialist training in theatre and live performance, dance, music, events, festivals, television or film.
It will allow you to develop creative and practical techniques using studios, specialist workshops and purpose-built facilities. You will reflect the day-to-day reality of the industry through project-based briefs and public performances.
Throughout the course, you will undertake:
- Technical skills such as sound and lighting operations, scenic painting, set construction, stage management, prop and costume making
- Creative studies including designing for set, costume, lighting, sound, props and special effects
- Contextual studies covering contemporary and historical issues in performance and business studies

Assessment methods
You will be assessed in a variety of ways, which could include assignments, external examinations, case studies and continual class assessment.
Entry requirements
5 GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including English and Maths. Equivalent qualifications are accepted, including a Merit at Level 2.
Continue your studies
On successful completion of Year 1, you will achieve the Level 3 Diploma. On successful completion of Year 2, you will achieve the Level 3 Extended Diploma.
Progression from the Level 3 Extended Diploma can include higher education, specialist training or working within the industry.
