Bridgend College bursary winner powers up his business in Bridgend Indoor Market.
A young entrepreneur from Bridgend has expanded his business venture, Power Meals, into a revamped Bridgend Indoor Market, located within the Rhiw Shopping Centre.
Power Meals, owned and run by Lucas Logan, 19, serves healthy meals based on a ‘build a box’ concept, where customers choose from a fresh selection of protein, carbohydrates and healthy extras. Lucas provides a ‘while you wait’ service and also a subscription service, enabling the busy and health conscious to facilitate their dietary needs.
Lucas’s business developed from an idea to a reality with the help from Ruth Rowe, Enterprise Officer at Bridgend College and Hayley Pells at Avia Autos in Bridgend. Lucas was awarded the College’s Fairwood Trust Enterprise Bursary and was pointed in the direction of Hayley at Avia, who supplied a kitchen space at Avia Diner and all the facilities for Power Meals to set up.
After spotting an advert for reduced rental rates at the indoor market however, Lucas decided to relocate Power Meals to a more central location within the town centre. Lucas is now sited near the entrance to the market, opposite the newly completed gym and flat development recently erected on the old Rhiw car park site.
Lucas has said his sales have doubled as a result of being in town, with the most popular dish being spicy rice with fajita chicken, broccoli and sweetcorn.
Lucas has praised both the College and Avia Autos for their support and guidance over the past few months, as well as for providing him with the vital skills needed to succeed. Despite his young age, Lucas is already stacking up his business experience. Studying for an AAT Level 2 qualification at Bridgend College, he has gained the right financial knowledge and experience to help kick start his venture.
“I had a great opportunity through Bridgend College and Avia Autos in Bridgend, I not only received the Bridgend College’s Fairwood Trust Enterprise Bursary which really helped to kick me off but also business advice, equipment and space from Avia, it definitely helped accelerate my venture.”
Power Meals now has a successful collaboration with Rage gym in Brackla, where the meal subscription service has really taken off. At the indoor market, the stall is open Monday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm with meals prepared and cooked from scratch. They also now offer a quorn option for vegetarians.
